Signs of Ceiling Damage That Every Homeowner Should Be Wary Of

Although your ceiling is right above your head, chances are you do not spend much time examining it. Thus, ceiling repairs tend to be a domestic problem that creeps up on homeowners after the damage has become quite extensive. Since the ceiling is directly under your roof, you should bear in mind that any structural damages to the roof will eventually manifest in the ceiling. These damages may be caused by a severe storm, undetected leaks or simply the age of the structure. Here are signs of ceiling damage that every homeowner should be wary of.

The ceiling has become discoloured

Ceiling discolouration can happen for various reasons. For instance, if your light bulbs are located close to the ceiling, using bulbs of extremely high wattage could eventually cause the area directly above the bulb to darken. However, there are other forms of discolouration that should have you getting in touch with a professional contractor. Brown patches on your ceiling that appear to be growing over time are a sure-fire sign of water damage occurring unhampered. As the moisture collects above your ceiling, it causes rotting of the plasterboard, which will inadvertently change the colour of your ceiling. It would be best to have your structure checked before it loses its integrity.

The paint on the ceiling is bubbling

Another telltale symptom of impending ceiling repairs is paint that has become compromised. Water that is left to pool above your ceiling will start to seep into the building materials. Although the paint provides an impervious layer on the surface of the ceiling, the excessive moisture will start to form bubbles in the paint. The bubbling could also be accompanied with yellowing, which is caused by watermarks. Rather than repainting your ceiling, it is advisable to have construction contractors inspect the ceiling and roofing to determine the source of the water ingress.

The shingles on your roof are damaged

Signs of impending ceiling repairs are not exclusive to the ceiling itself. In fact, inspecting your roofing would give you a better idea of whether your ceiling is at risk of early damage and give you the chance to arrest the underlying problem before it is exacerbated. One of the inspections to carry out would be examining the condition of your roofing shingles. Signs of cracking, warping, curling or even missing shingles would be a red flag of potential damage to your ceiling, as the roof will have lost its ability to protect your structure from precipitation.

About Me

When do you know that it is time to call in a contractor? When I decided to rewire my home and to replace the plumbing system, I didn't know how big a job it was going to be. My wife said I should call in a professional contractor but I said I could save some money by doing the job myself over the weekend. How wrong I was. By Sunday evening, the wires were all over the house and I couldn't remove several pipes from the bathroom. In the end, I called in a team of professional contractors who completed the work for me and also gave me some great advice which would help me to carry out DIY in the future.
